Movie Review : The Fault In Our Stars (2014)

Movie Review : The Fault In Our Stars (2014)

Plot:

-“Life doesn’t have to be perfect for love to be extraordinary.”

The Fault in Our Stars is a 2014 American romantic comedy-drama film directed by Josh Boone, based on the novel of the same name by John Green. The film stars Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort, and Nat Wolff, with Laura Dern, Sam Trammell, and Willem Dafoe in supporting roles. Woodley plays Hazel Grace Lancaster, a sixteen-year-old cancer patient who is forced by her parents to attend a support group, where she subsequently meets and falls in love with Augustus Waters, portrayed by Ansel Elgort.

Movie Review:

Note: If you think this is another chick-flick, a stupid perverted rom-com or a depressing story about cancer, ATTENTION: IT ISN’T.

Being a true fan of John Green’s ‘The Fault’, I was looking forward to its movie adaptation with great anticipation. And this movie is just spot on. Josh Boone was successful to bring out the essence of the book on the big screen in the right manner. The actors portraying the characters were utterly perfect and had a great understanding about their roles. I’ll start by talking about the rising enigma i.e. Shailene Woodley (known for her lead role in “Divergent”). She plays the terminally-ill Hazel Grace like no one else could have & makes me see Hazel in a new light. I greatly appreciate the qualities Hazel possesses of empathy, kindness, wit and no-nonsense attitude. I laughed with her, I cried with her & most of all, I understood her. That is what a protagonist is supposed to make you feel like and she did her job well.

“The world is not a wish-granting factory.”

Now, my favorite character i.e. Augustus Waters, who is portrayed by the new and talented actor Ansel Elgort (seen in “Carrie” and “Divergent”). I am just biased when it comes to him. First of all, I am irrevocably in love with Augustus Waters; secondly, Ansel is just so cute and charming like a peacock in this role..that I cannot even describe it to the best of my capabilities. He’s just adorable. *Sigh* He came in Hazel’s life and changed it forever, likewise he changed mine too.

“You don't get to choose if you get hurt in this world...but you do have some say in who hurts you. I like my choices.”

 Here’s a fun fact:
Ansel Elgort who played Shailene’s brother in Divergent is her “Epic love” in this movie. Yes, that’s right! Believe me, this movie isn’t awkward at all but seeing them as siblings in Divergent definitely was.

So I was talking about Ansel/Gus. He did his role of a pretentious ,dramatic ,metaphor-believing witty, and funny Augustus with utmost perfection. But when it came to cute, vulnerable, loving, caring , and emotional Augustus, he broke all the dams that were holding my tears back. I literally cried. I won’t give any spoilers though. Those who have read the book know what I am talking about and those who haven’t should a) READ IT! What are you waiting for? It’s a thin book with a roller coaster of emotions. & b) after reading the book, watch the movie! Because this is among the best book adaptations ever.

“I fell in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once.”

Then the cute/blind best friend Isaac is played by Natt Wolff. He is a great comic-relief in this movie. I loved how naturally he said all his lines like a normal person does, but I wish he had more scenes just like in the book. He was great though.& so was Hazel’s mom, played by Laura Dern .She reminded me of my own mom. Hazel’s father, Patrick from support-group & last and the least (pun intended) Peter van Houten were all like a fragmentation of my imagination put into reality.

“It's a metaphor, see: You put the killing thing right between your teeth, but you don't give it the power to do its killing.”-Augustus

The soundtrack of this movie is equally entertaining and is on repeat on my playlist. ‘All of the Stars’ by Ed Sheeran captures the soul of the entire movie. “All I Want” by Kodaline with its beautiful lyrics capture the tragic element and if you are looking for a peppy-teen number, listen to ‘Boom Clap’ by Charli XCX. ‘Let Me In’ by Grouplove is another good one.

Thank you John Green for bestowing the world with your acerbic wit in the form of Fault and thank you Josh Boone for making it soo perfect.
In a nutshell, this movie is worth every smile, every tear, every laugh. Watch it with your bffs or alone and have the time of your life. Okay? Okay.

“Oh, I wouldn't mind, Hazel Grace. It would be a privilege to have my heart broken by you.”
-Augustus

This movie is worth all the hype it is creating and is already my favourite romantic movie. I’ll rate it with:
*****

Official Clip : The Fault In Our Stars (Its A Metaphor) HD

Official Clip : The Fault In Our Stars (Its A Metaphor) HD

Taking advantage of the young adult audience watching the MTV Movie Awards Sunday night, “The Fault in Our Stars” leads Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort introduced a new clip of the Josh Boone adaptation of John Green hit YA novel — and they left the tearjerking moments out, for now.

Woodley stars as Hazel, who is fighting terminal cancer. She meets Elgort’s Gus at a youth cancer support group, and the book and film follows them on their ensuing romance with the backdrop of their serious health issues.

The one-minute clip shows the two stars getting to know each other on the day they first meet. Gus asks Hazel if she wants to go see a movie and it seems to be going well, but things quickly go downhill when Gus sticks a cigarette in his mouth. That sets Hazel off, especially given their health issues, but Gus assures her that he’s never actually lit a cigarette.

“It’s a metaphor,” he says. “You put the thing that does the killing right between your teeth, but you never give it the power to kill you — a metaphor.”

The film is set to bow June 6. Woodley and Elgort also appear together in the recently released adaptation of another popular YA novel, “Divergent,” as siblings, and will reprise their roles in the upcoming sequel “Insurgent.”

John Green's novel "The Fault in Our Stars" was a huge bestseller, so it's no surprise that a film adaptation is coming to movie screens. The film is scheduled for a June release; its first official trailer was posted online today.

In the book, Hazel meets Gus in a cancer support group for teens. The film stars Shailene Woodley as Hazel and Ansel Elgort as Gus, with Laura Dern and Willem Dafoe. As the trailer begins, Hazel says, "I believe we have a choice in this world about how to tell sad stories." And the clips that follow show how "The Fault in Our Stars" will be told on film.

Anyone who follows Green's tumblr has been seeing news of the film as it's gone through development and production. But as he writes, this is "The full #tfios trailer in beautiful high definition!"

Book Review: The Fault In Our Stars By John Green

The Fault In Our Stars (Novel By John Green)

About the Author:

John Michael Green (born August 24, 1977) is an American writer of young adult fiction and a YouTube vlogger and educator. He won the 2006 Printz Award for his debut novel, Looking for Alaska, and reached number one on a New York Times Best Seller list with The Fault in Our Stars in January 2012.

In August 2009, Green confirmed he was writing a new book, titled The Sequel, which was later scrapped. His fifth book, titled The Fault in Our Stars was released on January 10, 2012. Green explained that several parts of The Sequel were reworked into The Fault in Our Stars. Green signed all 150,000 copies of the first printing and his wife and his brother applied their own symbols, a Yeti and an Anglerfish (known as the "Hanklerfish"), respectively. The New York Times Best Seller List for Children's Books listed The Fault in Our Stars at Number 1 for the weeks of January 29, 2012 and February 5, 2012.

Plot Summary:

This is the story of Hazel Grace & Augustus Water. Hazel has cancer and she meets Augustus at Support Group. They are ADORABLE. Hazel is intelligent, funny, a great daughter and a very strong kid.
There is only one thing in this world shittier than biting it from cancer when you’re sixteen, and that’s having a kid who bites it from cancer-Hazel Grace
And Augustus… well, he’s charismatic, positive, funny, happy and a GREAT best friend. And the way he uses metaphors is just commendable! You’ll think how a teenage boy has so much depth and still be the fun teenager he is.
I enjoy looking at beautiful people, and I decided a while ago not to deny myself the simpler pleasures of existence-Augustus Waters

Hazel Grace is just like us, she loves books and she specially loves her favorite book An Imperial Affliction by Peter Van Houten who happens to be her best friend, but let’s say this is a one-sided friendship. I also want a lot of authors to be my friends!
She tells Augustus about the book and he obviously reads it because he would do ANYTHING for Hazel Grace.
”Love is keeping the promise anyway”
Enter Isaac, Augustus’ best friend.. A romantic, a fool romantic who has cancer in his eyes…Well a lot happens in this book, including a trip to Amsterdam, many cute romantic scenes and quotes..well this book is literally a quote garden! I am obsessed with its quotes.

This book is about love, friendship, fight, hope and life. And about infinities.

Review:

I'm not gonna review how exquisite John Green can write, or how he can create characters as special as Hazel Grace and Augustus Waters, or how amazing he can tell a story. Despite the huge number of ratings and the spectacular average rating, this book is not perfect. You might find it unrealistic, because if there are many of us who see the life and its complexity like Hazel and Gus do, this world will be such a happy place. So like any other book, this one also might be a miss or a hit. If it's a miss, then you can say it's not worth the hype. But if it's a hit, it hits hard. When you discover that a simple word like “Okay” can be someone’s lifeline like “Always” or “Forever”; you definitely crave to be a part of this fantasy.

Everything in this book: the characters, the story, the words, they all have the power to be an inspiration. If you haven't read it, I will suggest to you take the chance.

My Rating:  I will rate this book excellent and will like to keep it in my shelf always.

*****
My Favorite Quotes From the Book:
“That's the thing about pain," Augustus said, and then glanced back at me. "It demands to be felt”
“Sometimes, you read a book and it fills you with this weird evangelical zeal, and you become convinced that the shattered world will never be put back together unless and until all living humans read the book.”-Hazel Grace
