Movie Review : The Fault In Our Stars (2014)

Movie Review : The Fault In Our Stars (2014)

Plot:

-“Life doesn’t have to be perfect for love to be extraordinary.”

The Fault in Our Stars is a 2014 American romantic comedy-drama film directed by Josh Boone, based on the novel of the same name by John Green. The film stars Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort, and Nat Wolff, with Laura Dern, Sam Trammell, and Willem Dafoe in supporting roles. Woodley plays Hazel Grace Lancaster, a sixteen-year-old cancer patient who is forced by her parents to attend a support group, where she subsequently meets and falls in love with Augustus Waters, portrayed by Ansel Elgort.

Movie Review:

Note: If you think this is another chick-flick, a stupid perverted rom-com or a depressing story about cancer, ATTENTION: IT ISN’T.

Being a true fan of John Green’s ‘The Fault’, I was looking forward to its movie adaptation with great anticipation. And this movie is just spot on. Josh Boone was successful to bring out the essence of the book on the big screen in the right manner. The actors portraying the characters were utterly perfect and had a great understanding about their roles. I’ll start by talking about the rising enigma i.e. Shailene Woodley (known for her lead role in “Divergent”). She plays the terminally-ill Hazel Grace like no one else could have & makes me see Hazel in a new light. I greatly appreciate the qualities Hazel possesses of empathy, kindness, wit and no-nonsense attitude. I laughed with her, I cried with her & most of all, I understood her. That is what a protagonist is supposed to make you feel like and she did her job well.

“The world is not a wish-granting factory.”

Now, my favorite character i.e. Augustus Waters, who is portrayed by the new and talented actor Ansel Elgort (seen in “Carrie” and “Divergent”). I am just biased when it comes to him. First of all, I am irrevocably in love with Augustus Waters; secondly, Ansel is just so cute and charming like a peacock in this role..that I cannot even describe it to the best of my capabilities. He’s just adorable. *Sigh* He came in Hazel’s life and changed it forever, likewise he changed mine too.

“You don't get to choose if you get hurt in this world...but you do have some say in who hurts you. I like my choices.”

 Here’s a fun fact:
Ansel Elgort who played Shailene’s brother in Divergent is her “Epic love” in this movie. Yes, that’s right! Believe me, this movie isn’t awkward at all but seeing them as siblings in Divergent definitely was.

So I was talking about Ansel/Gus. He did his role of a pretentious ,dramatic ,metaphor-believing witty, and funny Augustus with utmost perfection. But when it came to cute, vulnerable, loving, caring , and emotional Augustus, he broke all the dams that were holding my tears back. I literally cried. I won’t give any spoilers though. Those who have read the book know what I am talking about and those who haven’t should a) READ IT! What are you waiting for? It’s a thin book with a roller coaster of emotions. & b) after reading the book, watch the movie! Because this is among the best book adaptations ever.

“I fell in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once.”

Then the cute/blind best friend Isaac is played by Natt Wolff. He is a great comic-relief in this movie. I loved how naturally he said all his lines like a normal person does, but I wish he had more scenes just like in the book. He was great though.& so was Hazel’s mom, played by Laura Dern .She reminded me of my own mom. Hazel’s father, Patrick from support-group & last and the least (pun intended) Peter van Houten were all like a fragmentation of my imagination put into reality.

“It's a metaphor, see: You put the killing thing right between your teeth, but you don't give it the power to do its killing.”-Augustus

The soundtrack of this movie is equally entertaining and is on repeat on my playlist. ‘All of the Stars’ by Ed Sheeran captures the soul of the entire movie. “All I Want” by Kodaline with its beautiful lyrics capture the tragic element and if you are looking for a peppy-teen number, listen to ‘Boom Clap’ by Charli XCX. ‘Let Me In’ by Grouplove is another good one.

Thank you John Green for bestowing the world with your acerbic wit in the form of Fault and thank you Josh Boone for making it soo perfect.
In a nutshell, this movie is worth every smile, every tear, every laugh. Watch it with your bffs or alone and have the time of your life. Okay? Okay.

“Oh, I wouldn't mind, Hazel Grace. It would be a privilege to have my heart broken by you.”
-Augustus

This movie is worth all the hype it is creating and is already my favourite romantic movie. I’ll rate it with:
*****

Official Clip : The Fault In Our Stars (Its A Metaphor) HD

Official Clip : The Fault In Our Stars (Its A Metaphor) HD

Taking advantage of the young adult audience watching the MTV Movie Awards Sunday night, “The Fault in Our Stars” leads Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort introduced a new clip of the Josh Boone adaptation of John Green hit YA novel — and they left the tearjerking moments out, for now.

Woodley stars as Hazel, who is fighting terminal cancer. She meets Elgort’s Gus at a youth cancer support group, and the book and film follows them on their ensuing romance with the backdrop of their serious health issues.

The one-minute clip shows the two stars getting to know each other on the day they first meet. Gus asks Hazel if she wants to go see a movie and it seems to be going well, but things quickly go downhill when Gus sticks a cigarette in his mouth. That sets Hazel off, especially given their health issues, but Gus assures her that he’s never actually lit a cigarette.

“It’s a metaphor,” he says. “You put the thing that does the killing right between your teeth, but you never give it the power to kill you — a metaphor.”

The film is set to bow June 6. Woodley and Elgort also appear together in the recently released adaptation of another popular YA novel, “Divergent,” as siblings, and will reprise their roles in the upcoming sequel “Insurgent.”

Book Review : Paper Towns by John Green

Book Review : Paper Towns by John Green

Book Synopsis:

Paper Towns is the third young adult novel by John Green known for his famous YA novels “The Fault In Our Stars” and “Looking For Alaska”.
Quentin Jacobsen has spent a lifetime loving the magnificently adventurous Margo Roth Spiegelman from afar. So when she cracks open a window and climbs back into his life—dressed like a ninja and summoning him for an ingenious campaign of revenge—he follows.
After their all-nighter ends and a new day breaks, Q arrives at school to discover that Margo, always an enigma, has now become a mystery. But Q soon learns that there are clues—and they’re for him. Urged down a disconnected path, the closer he gets, the less Q sees of the girl he thought he knew.

Review:

"Tonight, darling, we are going to right a lot of wrongs. And we are going to wrong some rights. The first shall be last; the last shall be first; the meek shall do some earth-inheriting. But before we can radically reshape the world, we need to shop."

The first 80% of this book followed John Green’s usual (and usually successful) recipe: a smart, well-read and generally well-balanced boy ( “Both my parents are therapists, which means I am really goddamned well adjusted.” ) becomes obsessed with a beautiful, chaotic and self-destructive girl and, through his infatuation, learns about himself, life and adulthood.
Quentin Jacobsen has been in love with his next door neighbor Margo Roth Spiegelman for as long as he can remember. Margo is everything: she is the most popular girl in school, she is smart, she is funny, she is restless. She has also been ignoring Q ever since they were old enough to have friends outside their neighborhood. Then, one night shortly before their graduation, Margo shows up at Quentin’s window and invites him along for a night or “righting some wrongs and wronging some rights”, after which she disappears, leaving only a few vague clues for Quentin to find. Instead of focusing on his finals and his upcoming graduation, Q becomes obsessed with finding Margo dead or alive (although dead seems more likely by the minute) and while searching, he learns the difference between Margo the dream and Margo the girl.
There are many wonderful things I could say about this book, but above all, I appreciated that Green kept pointing out how extraordinarily self-centered each and every character was. I would love to say that this was limited to teens, as one expects teens to be completely egocentric, but it started with Margo’s parents and spread to everyone else involved.  This book was definitely a fun read and had some really good characters and witty comebacks.

Quotes That Made Me Think:

-Isn't it also that on some fundamental level we find it difficult to understand that other people are human beings in the same way that we are? We idealize them as gods or dismiss them as animals.

-What a treacherous thing to believe that a person is more than a person.

-I'm starting to realize that people lack good mirrors. It's so hard for anyone to show us how we look, and so hard for us to show anyone how we feel.

-As much as life can suck, it always beats the alternative.

-“That's always seemed so ridiculous to me, that people want to be around someone because they're pretty. It's like picking your breakfeast cereals based on color instead of taste.”

Rating :

There is something about Green’s humor that just sits well with me.
I’ll rate this book:
***1/2

Movie Lovers Treat:

“Paper Towns” is being made into a movie by the team of “The Fault In Our Stars” and Natt Wolf has been casted as Quentin who is going to appear in TFIOS as Isaac.

Book Review : Looking For Alaska (John Green)

Book Review : Looking For Alaska (John Green)

“First friend, First girl, Last Words”

Plot:

Looking for Alaska is another brilliant novel by known to the world author John Green.
It’s a High school tale of wallflower Miles Halter who took left his hometown Florida to attend Culver Creek Preparatory High School in Alabama. He has resourceful parents but he insists on joining this school to find a new path to life and possibilities.
Soon after arriving at Culver Creek, Miles meets his roommate, Chip "The Colonel" Martin. The Colonel soon provides Miles with his very own nickname: "Pudge," ironic as Miles is tall and slender. Miles is later introduced to the Colonel’s friend, Alaska Young. Alaska is described as an attractive yet emotionally unstable girl. Besides Alaska, the Colonel also introduces him to Takumi, a student of Japanese descent. Alaska tells Pudge about Simon Bolivar's last words, which were "Damn it. How will I ever get out of this labyrinth!" Miles asks her what the labyrinth is and she tells him that's the mystery. After they joke about Alaska having a boyfriend and Pudge being single they make a deal: if Miles figures out what the labyrinth is then Alaska will get him laid.

Culver Creek is divided in two groups of students:
1.Weekday Warriors: The Rich Ones
2.The Ordinary Ones: Including Alaska and Friends.

Pranks are played by both sides on eachother. Alaska the prank-master is ahead all with The Colonel by her side.
After being a victim of a ruthless prank by Weekday Warriors Pudge becomes part of the game. He instantly falls for Alaska but keeps it to himself because she already has a committed relationship. He finds her truly fascinating with her presence overpowers his own self. While studying the religions, Pudge tries to find out the answer to the Labyrinth but every time he can’t satisfy the need of that question.
As Lara Buterskaya, a Romanian girl, enters their group Pudge feels attracted towards her and with the positive feedback finds his first girl.
In continuation of all the high school drama story takes turn and a very sad Alaska gives away her life in a car accident right after making out with Pudge on night. This event shakes each and every student of Culver Creek but destroys Pudge and The Colonel.
They both blame themselves for letting drunk Alaska leave the campus and try to solve the mystery of her suicide.

They find out the only way it could have happened was if she tried to squeeze through the truck and a police cruiser or if she did it on purpose, committing suicide. This causes them to wonder if they really are to blame or not. If she did commit suicide, then the Colonel believes she was selfish in making them help her. The Colonel insists on questioning Jake, her boyfriend, but Pudge refuses to, still clinging to the hope that Alaska wanted to be with him. They argue, the Colonel saying Pudge only loved the 'fun' side of Alaska, not all of her. Afterward, they make up, with Pudge realizing it's true and the Colonel confessing he's just angry and looking for someone to blame. They've been ignoring Takumi and Lara for a long time and apologize to them too (though Lara and Pudge don't seem to get back together). As a way of celebrating Alaska's life they plan the last prank. On Speaker Day the junior and senior classes are supposed to choose someone—a lawyer or small politician—to come speak to them. All of the junior class—Weekday Warriors, Pudge's friends, and everyone else—help with the prank. They convince the Eagle to let a friend of Pudge's dad to come speak of how sex is perceived by adolescents. In reality they hire a male stripper. When the man starts to give his speech Takumi starts the music. The man shouts “This one's for Alaska Young!” and strips in front of everyone.
The whole school finds it hilarious, even the Eagle who doesn't punish them. Pudge finds Alaska's copy of The General in his Labyrinth with the labyrinth quote underlined. In the margin was written 'straight and fast'. Later they remember what date Alaska's mom had died and realize Alaska died the morning after. They figure one of two things happened. Alaska remembered the anniversary of her mother's death and came to the room sobbing that she had to go, referring to her mother's grave. But it was already after midnight, the next day. She was drunk and angry at herself. When she saw the truck and the police cruiser she was either drunk enough that she thought she could pass through or she was so angry with herself that she committed suicide, taking the 'straight and fast' way out. The last day of school Takumi confesses in a note that he was the last person to see Alaska alive, he let her go too. Pudge realizes that this doesn't matter, their letting her go doesn't matter as much anymore. He forgives Alaska for going and knows that she forgives him for letting her go. He'll always love her, present tense.

Thomas Edison's last words were 'It's very beautiful over there'. I don't know where there is, but I believe it's somewhere, and I hope it's beautiful.

Review:

What you must understand about me is that I’m a deeply unhappy person.

Looking for Alaska is all you ever expect from John Green. Intense mysteries of life in words of a teen. That is the beauty of this novel. A boy who’s addicted with the last words and goes to seek a Greater Perhaps and finds the love of his life instead.

“If people were Rain,
I was Drizzle and she was a Hurricane”

Alaska is a character one will remember for the rest of his life. Intelligence with deep Emotions. She carries a complex personality but a true heart.

Y'all smoke to enjoy it. I smoke to die.”

The story clings to mind with many of its special factors, an unusual plot and even more unusual characters.
This is a story about finding the ones that you love and then letting them go. It’s about that one person which comes into your life to unveil the World and the mysteries of Great Perhaps.

For she had embodied the Great Perhaps--she had proved to me that it was worth it to leave behind my minor life for grander maybes, and now she was gone and with her my faith in perhaps.

Overall this book is the one to read
&
I will rate this awesome John Green Treat With

Exclusive (Heart-Touching) Trailer: The Fault In Our Stars

John Green's novel "The Fault in Our Stars" was a huge bestseller, so it's no surprise that a film adaptation is coming to movie screens. The film is scheduled for a June release; its first official trailer was posted online today.

In the book, Hazel meets Gus in a cancer support group for teens. The film stars Shailene Woodley as Hazel and Ansel Elgort as Gus, with Laura Dern and Willem Dafoe. As the trailer begins, Hazel says, "I believe we have a choice in this world about how to tell sad stories." And the clips that follow show how "The Fault in Our Stars" will be told on film.

Anyone who follows Green's tumblr has been seeing news of the film as it's gone through development and production. But as he writes, this is "The full #tfios trailer in beautiful high definition!"

BOOK REVIEW: Let It Snow

BOOK REVIEW: Let It Snow

by John Green , Maureen Johnson Lauren Myracle

Plot :

Sparkling white snowdrifts, beautiful presents wrapped in ribbons, and multicolored lights glittering in the night through the falling snow. A Christmas Eve snowstorm transforms one small town into a romantic haven, the kind you see only in movies. Well, kinda. After all, a cold and wet hike from a stranded train through the middle of nowhere would not normally end with a kiss from a charming stranger. And no one would think that a trip to the Waffle House through four feet of snow would lead to love with an old friend. Or that the way back to true love begins with a painfully early morning shift at Starbucks. Thanks to three of today’s bestselling teen authors—John Green, Maureen Johnson, and Lauren Myracle—the magic of the holidays shines on these hilarious and charming interconnected tales of love, romance, and friendship.

Summary:

The Jubilee Express

This story follows teenager Jubilee Dougal, who has been forced to spend Christmas Eve with her grandparents after her parents are arrested for participating in a riot over a set of miniature decorative houses. While on the train ride to her grandparents' place in Florida, Jubilee meets Jeb, who is trying to contact his girlfriend back home but is unable to find cell phone service.
She also runs into a group of cheerleaders, whom she attempts to distance herself from due to them annoying her. She grows further annoyed and exacerbated after the train gets stuck in a large snowstorm on Christmas Eve. While trying to call her boyfriend Noah, Jubilee runs into Stuart, a fellow teenager and employee of Target.
After talking with him for a little while, he invites her to spend Christmas with him and his family. Jubilee agrees and is welcomed into his family's home. Stuart's mother comments that she hadn't seen Stuart this happy since before he discovered his girlfriend was cheating on him. Meanwhile Jubilee continues to tell Stuart about how wonderful Noah is, only to realize that Noah has not contacted her at all that night. She calls Noah up and confronts him.
When Noah cannot respond to her queries over why he couldn't at least show some concern, she breaks up with him. Stuart comes to comfort Jubilee and the two kiss. Feeling guilty, Jubilee tries to sneak out and is discovered by Stuart, who tells her that everything will be OK and not to let Noah walk all over her. Her phone rings with a phone call from Noah, only for Jubilee to toss the phone into the snow and kisses Stuart, after which the two walk back to his home together.

A Cheertastic Christmas Miracle

The story  follows a boy Tobin and his friends, the Duke (a tomboy whose real name is Angie), and JP, who are watching movies at Tobin's home while his parents are out of town. They're lured to the local Waffle House by a phone call from their friend Keun, who tells them that a group of cheerleaders has entered the store and are practicing their routines, as well as requesting to play Twister.
Thinking that traveling to the restaurant with the game would be a waste of time, Duke is initially reluctant to go but is persuaded by Tobin, who tells her that there will be hashbrowns. On the way to the Waffle House the trio's car crashes into a snow bank close to the restaurant, losing one of the tires. They forget the Twister game in the car and must go back for it at one point, but eventually make it to the Waffle House.
Once inside, they run into the character of Jeb, who is still trying to reach his girlfriend. He asks them if they know anyone by the name of Addie. The three say no, and he asks them that if they see her, to tell her that he was coming and that she would know what he meant. Tobin then attempts and fails to make conversation with one of the cheerleaders.
While he's returning to his seat, he notices that Duke is sitting outside on the sidewalk, clearly upset and crying. He goes outside to find out what is wrong, only for her to tell him that she's upset that nobody thinks of her as a girl and that she was jealous that he'd flirted with the cheerleader despite her feelings for him. Tobin tells her that he had been unaware of her feelings, but that he had also had a crush on her all along. The two then kiss.

The Patron Saint of Pigs

The third story follows a girl named Addie, who is depressed because she broke up with her boyfriend Jeb. The backstory of her relationship with Jeb is told, about how the two had instantly fallen for each other, but that Addie had kept trying to change Jeb. This resulted in Jeb feeling inferior and the two fighting. After one fight Addie had gotten drunk and made out with someone else, telling Jeb it was over. Upset, Jeb had taken a train to meet his family on an Indian reservation, unaware that Addie has sent him an email apologizing and hoping to work things out.
When he didn't call or respond, Addie assumed that the relationship was over and cut her hair short and dyed it pink as a way to show that she wanted a change. She calls her friends over to talk, only for them to tell her that she can be self-absorbed and doesn't think of others. Disagreeing, she states that in the morning she will purchase a teacup pig as a gift for her friend Tegan while she is on break from work at Starbucks. The next morning at work Addie ends up getting caught in conversation with a woman who claims to be a "Christmas Angel" and says that people forget to do things for others when they get wrapped up in themselves. This causes her to forget to pick up the pig, who has been adopted by someone else. Upset, Addie manages to get the address of the woman who adopted the pig, who ends up being the woman she spoke to earlier.
The woman informs Addie that she took the pig to teach her a lesson and gives Addie the pig. Addie then returns to work, where she sees Stuart and Jubilee and Tobin and Angie, the couples from the two previous stories. Tobin sees her name tag, which prompts him to tell her that he had met Jeb and that he had a message from her. After hearing the message Addie's spirits lift and suddenly Jeb walks into the store, having arrived shortly after the others. The two embrace, and then Jeb tells her about the train ride and his attempts to call her. As he tells her about various things he saw on the way, Tobin and Duke are drawn into the conversation as they recount that they had gone to see them at the Waffle House. Jubilee then realizes how everyone's lives have been brought together and how it had all changed for the better.

Review:

This is the perfect book to curl up with when it’s cold and snowing outside. It is one of those reads that just makes you want to snuggle up on your couch, a hot cocoa or tea in hand and enjoy the winterly atmosphere. In fact, the only thing missing for my perfect reading experience was the fireplace and snow.
I don’t want to give too much away about the stories themselves because I think it is best to go into this book unprepared and let yourself be surprised. I liked all three stories, but The Jubilee Express and A Cheertastic Christmas Miracle were slightly better than the last one, The Patron Saint of Pigs.
The first one was the funniest. And all the stories were linked together like those movies, ‘Valentine Day’, ‘New Year’s Eve’ and ‘Love Actually’.

All in all, this short story collection is perfect for you if you are looking for a light and fun Christmas/winter read.

The stories are sometimes hilarious, sometimes sweet, slightly crazy, full of lovable characters , provide you with a nice Christmas/winter feeling, make you laugh out loud and are just great to get lost in. I'm positive I'll pick this book up again some coming winter.

My rating for this light and funny book is :
***1/2
Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays!

Book Review: The Fault In Our Stars By John Green

The Fault In Our Stars (Novel By John Green)

About the Author:

John Michael Green (born August 24, 1977) is an American writer of young adult fiction and a YouTube vlogger and educator. He won the 2006 Printz Award for his debut novel, Looking for Alaska, and reached number one on a New York Times Best Seller list with The Fault in Our Stars in January 2012.

In August 2009, Green confirmed he was writing a new book, titled The Sequel, which was later scrapped. His fifth book, titled The Fault in Our Stars was released on January 10, 2012. Green explained that several parts of The Sequel were reworked into The Fault in Our Stars. Green signed all 150,000 copies of the first printing and his wife and his brother applied their own symbols, a Yeti and an Anglerfish (known as the "Hanklerfish"), respectively. The New York Times Best Seller List for Children's Books listed The Fault in Our Stars at Number 1 for the weeks of January 29, 2012 and February 5, 2012.

Plot Summary:

This is the story of Hazel Grace & Augustus Water. Hazel has cancer and she meets Augustus at Support Group. They are ADORABLE. Hazel is intelligent, funny, a great daughter and a very strong kid.
There is only one thing in this world shittier than biting it from cancer when you’re sixteen, and that’s having a kid who bites it from cancer-Hazel Grace
And Augustus… well, he’s charismatic, positive, funny, happy and a GREAT best friend. And the way he uses metaphors is just commendable! You’ll think how a teenage boy has so much depth and still be the fun teenager he is.
I enjoy looking at beautiful people, and I decided a while ago not to deny myself the simpler pleasures of existence-Augustus Waters

Hazel Grace is just like us, she loves books and she specially loves her favorite book An Imperial Affliction by Peter Van Houten who happens to be her best friend, but let’s say this is a one-sided friendship. I also want a lot of authors to be my friends!
She tells Augustus about the book and he obviously reads it because he would do ANYTHING for Hazel Grace.
”Love is keeping the promise anyway”
Enter Isaac, Augustus’ best friend.. A romantic, a fool romantic who has cancer in his eyes…Well a lot happens in this book, including a trip to Amsterdam, many cute romantic scenes and quotes..well this book is literally a quote garden! I am obsessed with its quotes.

This book is about love, friendship, fight, hope and life. And about infinities.

Review:

I'm not gonna review how exquisite John Green can write, or how he can create characters as special as Hazel Grace and Augustus Waters, or how amazing he can tell a story. Despite the huge number of ratings and the spectacular average rating, this book is not perfect. You might find it unrealistic, because if there are many of us who see the life and its complexity like Hazel and Gus do, this world will be such a happy place. So like any other book, this one also might be a miss or a hit. If it's a miss, then you can say it's not worth the hype. But if it's a hit, it hits hard. When you discover that a simple word like “Okay” can be someone’s lifeline like “Always” or “Forever”; you definitely crave to be a part of this fantasy.

Everything in this book: the characters, the story, the words, they all have the power to be an inspiration. If you haven't read it, I will suggest to you take the chance.

My Rating:  I will rate this book excellent and will like to keep it in my shelf always.

*****
My Favorite Quotes From the Book:
“That's the thing about pain," Augustus said, and then glanced back at me. "It demands to be felt”
“Sometimes, you read a book and it fills you with this weird evangelical zeal, and you become convinced that the shattered world will never be put back together unless and until all living humans read the book.”-Hazel Grace
